Owned by John and Angela Thompson and run by the family, Thompsons Fish and Chip Restaurant is located on the A64 between York and Malton – attracting customers from far and wide who go out of their way to visit the restaurant.

As the winners of The Press Best Chippy in 2024, the family are no strangers to awards however head chef Helen Thompson said that every one of them were surprised to have been crowned again.

She said: “Have we done it again? Oh wow, I really wasn’t expecting that! We’re so chuffed about this. I thought that there’s some really great chippies in the contest, and we’re so happy that our customers have been standing by us.

“We want to thank everyone for voting for us. Our older customers who read The Press every day have told us that they’ve been so excited for the contest; we’re honoured to have the best regulars and amazing staff, some of whom have been here for 25 years.”

Shop owner John Thompson also said that he was ‘genuinely humbled’ to have been voted Best Chippy – adding that he is incredibly grateful for the loyalty of their customers.

He said: “We have the most fantastic customers, and I cannot thank them enough for their support over the years. This award belongs just as much to them as it does to anyone else. Without their loyalty, trust and votes, none of this would be possible.

“I am also incredibly fortunate to have the most amazing team. Whether someone has been here for 25 years, 25 months or 25 days, I value every single member of the team exactly the same. They all play a vital role in what we do, and I am enormously grateful for their hard work, dedication and commitment.

“I’d also like to thank our suppliers, many of whom we’ve worked alongside for years, and I’d also like to congratulate the other nine finalists. Every one of them is a fantastic business, and anyone working in our trade knows just how difficult things have been in recent years.

“The fish and chip industry continues to face many challenges, and simply being nominated and keeping up a great British tradition is an achievement in itself.

“This award is not for me personally. It belongs to our team, our suppliers and our customers. They are the reason we are standing here today, and I want to say a heartfelt thank you and well done to every one of them.

“For us, this award is a proud moment, but tomorrow we’ll be back doing exactly what we’ve always done – working hard, serving great food and looking after our customers.”
