City of York Council is marking Armed Forces Day today with a flag-raising tribute and a week of activities.
The Armed Forces Day flag will fly above the Mansion House in York to honour the service and sacrifices of military personnel and their families.
Councillor Claire Douglas, leader of City of York Council and Armed Forces Champion, said: "On Armed Forces Day, we join communities across York and beyond in thanking all those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and recognising the sacrifices made by them and their families.
"We are proud of our commitment as a Gold Award signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, and we remain dedicated to ensuring that the Armed Forces community in York is supported, valued and respected."
As a Gold Award signatory, the council offers ongoing support through welfare services, advice, and community networks.
It also hosts a weekly Armed Forces Drop-In Centre at the Spurriergate Centre.
York also maintains strong civic connections with the military through its Lord Mayor and councillors attending Remembrance Sunday and other related events.
A highlight of the week’s activities will be the Armed Forces Football Festival at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday, July 12.
