An HGV has been involved in a collision with the old railway bridge on Huntington Road in York.

There were no reports of any injuries but the road was closed to traffic with Highways Engineers and the Police at the scene earlier.

YorkMix understands there is no serious damage to the old bridge but there needs to be a clean up operation after a large amount of white powder was dislodged from the lorry.

The road was still closed under the bridge at 7:30pm this evening, it’s hoped it will fully reopen in a few hours. The power has become sticky and very smelly in the heat.

An eyewitness told us they spoke to the driver shortly after it happened and they said they were not hurt.

Police issued a statement earlier:

Emergency Services and City of York Council are dealing with an incident in which an articulated lorry has become stuck under the old railway bridge on Huntington Road in York.

It happened at around 11.05am today (Friday 26 June). No-one has been hurt.

The stretch of road – and the cycle path which now runs over the bridge – have been closed while the lorry is safely recovered and for the bridge to be inspected by highways engineers.

As of 7:30pm Friday evening the road under the bridge is still closed off but the cycle path is open.
