The change, known as the PSTN switch-off, will see traditional analogue phone lines replaced with digital services delivered through broadband connections. While many households may notice little difference, the change could affect older residents, vulnerable people, and anyone using telecare devices, pendant alarms, home security systems, or other equipment connected to a landline.

A free plain-English checklist has been made available to help residents understand what they may need to do before the switch takes place in their area. The checklist covers topics such as checking whether existing phones and alarm systems will continue to work, understanding what happens during a power cut, and finding out about emergency backup options.

Key advice for residents includes:

  • Contacting their phone or broadband provider to ask when the switch will happen locally.
  • Checking whether home phones, personal alarms, or burglar alarms are compatible with the new digital system.
  • Ensuring important contact numbers are written down and easily accessible.
  • Asking providers about emergency backup solutions for those who rely on landlines and do not have a mobile phone.
