The feature highlights the Mayor’s early priorities and ambitions, as well as the announcement of a new monthly column that will keep residents informed about the work of Harrogate Town Council.
It’s great to see our vision for the town highlighted in the press, shining a light on our commitment to a vibrant, inclusive and successful future for Harrogate.
This month’s article was as follows:
Mayoral Appointment
As you may have seen on social media feeds I was elected mayor of Harrogate town on Wednesday May 6th. I feel truly honoured to be the first female in this role & thanked everyone involved at my well attended ceremony.
Getting Started
I have hit the ground running and have already attended a few events. I met with the Harrogate Heart Support Group prior to my official start date, kindly hosted by the Harrogate Chocolate Factory.
We had a great afternoon discussing a variety of topics, and I encourage anyone with heart failure to contact them – especially to enjoy the fayre at the cafe.
Community Visits and Events
Claro Enterprise Visit
I had a busy day on Friday, initially attending the Claro Enterprises on Spa Lane where I was introduced to staff and shown around the workshop. I saw first hand the products that they make and sell.
It is an incredible service helping those with mental health issues – referrals can be made via your social prescriber in your GP surgery.
Your Harrogate Hero Awards
I then had the delight of attending the Your Harrogate Hero Awards at Rudding Park. It was definitely an emotional evening with some amazing stories of bravery and overcoming adversity – truly humbling.
Queen Ethelburga’s Speech Day
On Saturday, I represented Harrogate at the Queen Ethelburga’s Speech Day and was thoroughly entertained by the very talented pupils who originate from a variety of backgrounds.
Their motto of respect, responsibility and integrity was a testament to their achievements and awards.
Civic Service at St Marys Church
On Sunday, I attended the civic service at St Marys’ Church in Knaresborough, invited by the outgoing Mayor and was introduced to other mayoral colleagues.
We were then entertained by Helen, the outgoing Mayor’s choir.
Business and Partnerships
On Monday night I attended the Chamber of Commerce event followed by their AGM. We had a constructive evening with various partners and I hope to build on these relationships throughout the year.
Recognition
I was also reminded that yesterday was International Nurses Day and posted my genuine thanks to this vital workforce in the NHS and social care.
Staying Connected
I am now on Instagram so please follow “Harrogate Mayor” if you want to keep up with my activities.
I am also open to invitations from any local service or group so that I can raise their profile & awareness.
Contact: mayoral@harrogatetowncouncil.gov.uk or click the “invite the Mayor” link below to send your details and dates. I will endeavour to attend as many events or meetings as possible especially where at least 6 weeks’ notice is given.
Priorities and Vision
As I mentioned in my inaugural speech I wish to:
- Raise the profile of Harrogate Town Council
- Help clarify and signpost issues relating to North Yorkshire Council or other partners.
- Promote Harrogate as a town.
We also have a Facebook page and website for Harrogate Town Council, and any recommendations or feedback will be gratefully received.
Approach and Community Focus
I intend to remain approachable and visible during my tenure. As a local GP, I have a strong interest in wellbeing and recognise that we have a myriad of support groups and activities in the town that many people may not be aware of. I am keen to promote these services.
As I said I my speech, with my enthusiasm and energy, I am not afraid to roll up my sleeves and help with activities. I am looking forward to the events that I have ready been invited to in the coming weeks.
Looking Ahead
I hope this regular feature becomes useful to the readers!
