We have been informed by North Yorkshire Council that it has released its latest update on highways coordination across Harrogate, setting out planned maintenance, improved communication measures, and the introduction of a new Lane Rental scheme for the year ahead. The information was shared with Harrogate Town Council and local stakeholders as part of the March/April 2026 coordination briefing.
New Communications Group Aims to Improve Roadworks Information
The newly formed Harrogate Road Work Communication Group met for the first time in March. Chaired by North Yorkshire Council (NYC) officers and attended by communications leads from local utility companies, the group has been established to strengthen how information about roadworks is shared with the public. The meetings will take place quarterly, with key updates distributed to councillors and stakeholders following each session.
Quarterly Coordination Meeting Completed
NYC’s Highways Team, alongside utility companies, contractors and Development Control, has completed its quarterly coordination meeting, reviewing all upcoming planned works on the local highway network. The purpose of this meeting is to identify potential clashes, examine traffic management plans and explore opportunities for joint working where possible to reduce disruption to road users.
Lane Rental Scheme to Begin in May
From 5 May 2026, NYC will introduce a Lane Rental scheme, allowing the council to charge contractors and utility providers for occupying the busiest roads at the busiest times. This approach is designed to encourage shorter, more strategically planned works, and to help minimise delays for residents and visitors. Further details are available via NYC’s consultation resources. Lane rental scheme consultation | North Yorkshire Council
