On one of the Hottest Weekends, St Mark’s Church Celebrates Climate Action Milestone - Harrogate Town Council

It seems appropriate that St Mark's Church celebrated their Ecochurch Gold Award on one of the hottest weekends of the year, and just after a hosepipe ban was introduced in North Yorkshire! "Tackling climate change is a vitally important part of the gospel message", said Deborah Booth, St Mark’s Environment Officer, "and this type of unusual, but increasingly frequent, weather event is a reminder to us all of the need for lifestyle changes.

The prestigious award was presented to the church by The Ven Dr James Theodosius, Archdeacon of Richmond & Craven, himself a real leader on decarbonisation. It was received on behalf of the church by one of St Mark’s youngest climate activists, Hannah aged six, who already campaigns with her parents for cleaner air in Harrogate.

The 190 strong congregation, celebrated with singing, prayers, Bible reading and an inspirational talk from Archdeacon James, who reminded us that Christ’s redemptive work on the cross was not only for humankind but for the whole of creation, as symbolised by the cross itself being ‘planted’ in the earth.

The church was honoured to be joined on this occasion by local dignitaries, Councillors Chris Aldred (Harrogate Mayor), Jenny Travena (Deputy Mayor), Chrissie Holmes and Paula Stott, who all enjoyed the service.

The Eco Church Awards – Bronze, Silver and Gold – provide a useful framework for churches who are trying to reduce their carbon emissions, by offering small, gradual steps on the journey to net zero.

St Mark’s Church is the first church in Harrogate to be awarded Gold, but all the churches in the Deanery are diligently working towards awards.
