Heatwave: North Yorkshire Council issues tips on how to survive the hot weather
An amber Heat Health Alert is in place from today (June 24) until Thursday June 25 at 11pm.
The Met Office is predicting temperatures will rise to around 30 degrees today and may exceed 32 degrees on Friday.
The Government’s Heat Health Alert page states that significant impacts are expected across health and social care services due to the high temperatures.
The website says that there is likely to be an increased demand on all health and social care services, and internal temperatures in care settings (such as hospitals and care homes) may exceed the recommended threshold for clinical risk assessment.
There may be a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions. There may also be impacts on younger age groups
There could be an increased demand for power exceeding capacity and water‑related incidents may increase, including risks from cold‑water shock and drowning.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Council said: “Although many of us enjoy the hot weather, some groups of people are more vulnerable to heat.
“Please look out for older people, those with existing health conditions and young children, who are particularly at risk.
“Please take care around open water. While rivers, lakes and the coast can look like a tempting place to cool off, they are full of hidden dangers. Even on warm days, the water temperature can be dangerously cold, and tides, currents, hidden rocks and vegetation can catch even experienced swimmers off guard.”
