Remarkable Harrogate shop founded in 1906 now boasts five generations of family ownership

One of Harrogate’s most favourite and successful stores is to celebrate its 120th anniversary next week still run by the same family after all these years.

Smiths of Harrogate will mark the occasion with a special anniversary weekend running from Friday, July 3 to Monday, July 6, featuring in-store events, competitions, promotions and refreshments for customers.

Founded in 1906 by Frederick Smith, this sizable store has grown from a modest second-hand furniture shop into one of Harrogate’s biggest and best-known independent retailers.

Proud of its long-standing place at the heart of the local community, the store has helped generations of customers create beautiful homes.

Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, it continues to be run by the Smith family today.

Oliver Smith, representing the fifth generation of the family, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be celebrating 120 years as a family business in Harrogate.

"It’s a real milestone for us, and we’re very grateful to our customers, colleagues and the local community for their continued support over the years.

“Our anniversary celebrations are a chance to say thank you and we’d love people to visit us and be part of it.”

The company’s home on Dragon Road, known locally as “Smiths The Rink”, has been part of its identity for decades.

The building, a former roller skating rink, had already become a local landmark before Smiths moved in, and the nickname has remained ever since.

Over the years, the business has evolved to reflect changing tastes and lifestyles.

Today, the 30,000 square foot showroom offers a wide range of furniture, beds and home interiors from leading manufacturers, with customers often surprised by the scale and choice available.

The store’s bed department has become a destination in its own right, with more than 60 beds on display.

Smiths also maintains long-standing relationships with a number of respected brands and is one of the longest-established retailers of Ercol in the country.

Despite its long history, the business continues to focus on providing a personal and approachable service.

Many members of the team have worked in the industry for decades, offering knowledgeable advice while encouraging customers to browse at their own pace.

That commitment extends beyond the showroom. Smiths operates its own delivery service, with experienced teams serving customers across Harrogate, Yorkshire and further afield.

As it looks to the future, the business remains focused on combining traditional values with a modern retail experience, continuing to serve generations of customers in Harrogate and beyond.
