Don't Spark Disaster! - Warning issued after four wild fires in North Yorkshire in 24 hours

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a plea for caution after four wild fires were reported on Wednesday (June 24).

The fire service has teamed up with North York Moors National Park, North Yorkshire Council, Visit North Yorkshire and Forestry England to spread the word about the danger of wildfires.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We don’t want another wildfire like last year, and you can help us prevent them.

"Please share this video to show the impact BBQs or campfires can have.”

On 12 August 2025, the Langdale Forest/Fylingdales Moor wildfire was declared a major incident and became the biggest wildfire in the history of the North York Moors National Park.

The warning comes after firefighters attended a number of wild fires in North Yorkshire.

In the Early hours of Wednesday Morning (June 24), Stokesley and Danby crews were sent to investigate an area in woodland smouldering involving undergrowth and peat.

Crew confirmed a small campfire had spread to woodland area.

Crews extinguished the fire using knapsack sprayers and a hose reel.

At 8.47am, a crew from Scarborough responded to reports of the grass smouldering in Filey, on arrival crews found a fire measuring approximately one by two metres.

Crews used knapsack sprayers to dampen down and spades to dig out the affected area.

At 9.38am, crews from Kirkbymoorside and Scarborough responded to reports of a fire in a woodland area at Throxenby.

On arrival crews found a fire measuring approximately four by three metres.

Crews used four knapsack sprayers, one extended hose reel jet, wildfire beaters and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish and check for hotspots.

Further afield, at 7.56pm, a crew from Knaresborough responded to a fire in the open at Bond End.

This was found to be a disposable BBQ and crews extinguished.
