More than 40,000 people have signed a petition to save the BBC’s long-running home renovation series DIY SOS.

The show, which first aired in 1999 and is currently fronted by Nick Knowles, is set to be “rested” in 2027 as part of the broadcaster’s latest round of cost-cutting measures.

DIY SOS has earned a loyal following by transforming the homes of families facing severe illness, disability, bereavement, or building disasters, with the help of volunteers and tradespeople from local communities.

The BBC’s decision has prompted a wave of public backlash.

A Change.org petition calling for the show to be saved has already surpassed 40,400 signatures.

The petition states: "In 2025, I had the extraordinary privilege of contributing to a show on the BBC that has made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals.

"This wasn't just another reality TV series; it was a beacon of hope for those struggling in difficult circumstances.

"The show brought together a community of tradespeople who volunteered their time, skills, and resources to make miraculous transformations in people's living situations, changing lives for the better.

"This program showcased raw and heartfelt stories of real people, grappling with the hardships of everyday life.

"It highlighted the power of compassion and community, bringing viewers not just entertainment, but also a myriad of invaluable life lessons.

"For the many families it has helped, the show has been nothing less than life-changing, offering them a chance at a fresh start and an improved future.

"Unfortunately, there are discussions underway about cancelling this invaluable show.

"Ending it means turning away from those in need and ignoring the good it brings.

"At a time when reality often feels overwhelmingly challenging, this show stands as a reminder to all of us of the potential we have to make a difference in our communities.

"We urge the BBC to reconsider any plans to cancel this essential program.

"By preserving it, we continue to foster a spirit of generosity, empathy, and community support that the show so beautifully encapsulates.

"Let us keep telling these important stories and making a tangible difference in people's lives."

Why has the BBC rested DIY SOS?

The BBC has confirmed that DIY SOS will be rested after its current series concludes.

The corporation insists the programme has not been permanently cancelled, with a new spin-off show revisiting families and renovation projects from its history set to take its place.

A BBC spokesperson said: "In light of the BBC’s savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore.

"DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show’s past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year."

The BBC has also rested the annual DIY SOS Children In Need special, which typically involves a large-scale charitable project supporting young people.

These decisions form part of wider efforts to save £500 million over the next three years, which have already resulted in the cancellation of other popular programmes including Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind, and Live At The Apollo.

Nick Knowles "disappointed" about decision to rest DIY SOS

DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles said he was "disappointed" by the decision but acknowledged the financial pressures facing the broadcaster.

Knowles said: "You may have already seen the news that DIY SOS is being put on 'pause.'

"Of course, I’m disappointed not to be filming the show next year or again in the same format we know and love.

"But I do understand there’s no endless pot of money at the BBC and sometimes they have to make difficult decisions.

"For 26 years it’s been an honour and a privilege to be part of DIY SOS and I’ve loved nothing more than making it.

"What I always come back to is that it’s the people who are the beating heart of SOS.

"It really is the best of Britain and we need to see more of it on telly."

He also thanked the families, volunteers, production team, and viewers who have supported the show over the years.

Knowles continued: "To the volunteers, production team, purple shirts, commissioners and everyone watching at home, we couldn’t have done this without you.

"And to everyone who hasn’t seen the series yet, give it a watch.

"I promise your heart will be warmed."
