Thousands of Yorkshire homes remain without power after Storm Boelo caused widespread damage to the network, although Northern Powergrid says it has restored supplies to most affected customers.

Power cuts hit Shipley, Menston, Keighley, Riddlesden, Ilkley and Otley across parts of Airedale and Wharfedale over the weekend and on Monday morning.

Northern Powergrid said almost 140,000 customers across Yorkshire and the North East have suffered power cuts since the storm hit.

A spokesperson said: "We now have a clear picture of the damage caused by Storm Boelo, and repair work is well underway across our region.

"Since the storm hit, almost 140,000 customers in our region have been impacted by power cuts.

"Thanks to ongoing efforts by our teams, we've already restored power to 97 per cent of customers affected, leaving around 4,400 still without electricity."

Most customers should be reconnected today

Engineers are repairing overhead lines and damaged equipment, with extra teams sent to the worst-hit areas.

Menston had one of the biggest clusters of reported power cuts, with further outages around Shipley, Keighley, Riddlesden, Ilkley and Otley.

The outage map also showed scheduled work taking place in the BD17 area of Shipley.

Northern Powergrid said most remaining customers should be reconnected by the end of the day, although complex faults may take longer to fix.

Support teams and welfare vehicles were working in affected areas, offering hot drinks, device charging and practical help.

Local partners have provided food vans and warm spaces, while customers on Northern Powergrid’s Priority Services Membership scheme continue to receive extra support and updates.

Northern Powergrid urged customers to check its live power-cut map for updates and call 105 to report damage or if they cannot get online.

They should also keep appliances switched off at the socket because power could return at any time.

The company said it would keep issuing updates until every customer was safely reconnected.
