PUBLIC feedback is being sought for a major new planning strategy that will shape development in Craven and across North Yorkshire for decades to come.
North Yorkshire Council has launched a six-week public consultation for its first county-wide local plan, which will guide growth and planning decisions across the region up to 2045.
The new plan will replace existing local plans from the former district and borough councils of Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, and Selby, and will set out a unified vision for housing, employment, infrastructure, and environmental protection. It will not include the Yorkshire Dales National Park, which has its own management plan.

Councillor Mark Crane, deputy leader of North Yorkshire Council and executive member for open to business, said: "The local plan will play a crucial role in setting out where we feel planned, coordinated and sustainable development should take place across North Yorkshire for years to come.
"It will influence where new homes, jobs and services are located, how we protect our environment, support our economy and create thriving, sustainable communities.
"We are at an early stage in preparing the plan, and this consultation provides an important opportunity for people to tell us what issues they think it should address and how they would like to be involved as it progresses.
"We want to hear from as many people as possible because their views will help shape the plan and ensure it reflects the needs and aspirations of communities across North Yorkshire."
The current consultation is the first of three formal opportunities where the public can have their say before the plan is finalised and adopted. It is also the first consultation to take place under the Government’s new national plan-making system, which came into effect in March.
This new system places a greater emphasis on digital plan-making, including the use of standardised data, user-friendly online tools and searchable electronic documents.
The plan is still in its early stages, and the council is seeking input from residents, businesses, community groups, and other stakeholders to help shape its direction and priorities.
Earlier work carried out by the council will continue to inform the process.
In 2025, a "first conversation" consultation gathered public views on issues and options for North Yorkshire’s inaugural county-wide plan.
Although the process must now restart under the new national system, feedback from that initial engagement will still influence the development of the updated strategy.
Following the close of the current consultation on Monday, December 7, the council will publish a summary of all responses received.
This feedback will help inform the next stage of plan preparation.
The council expects to pass the first formal “gateway” stage of the process in April 2027, with the aim of adopting the final plan by the end of 2029.
The completed plan will guide future planning decisions, including where homes, businesses, and supporting infrastructure should be located.
It will also set out policies for protecting and enhancing landscapes, heritage sites, and environmental assets across the county.
This year's 'call for sites' by the council provided an opportunity for landowners, site promoters, developers or other interested parties to put sites forward for consideration in the new local plan to meet the future needs of the area.
