The volunteers behind Bishop Auckland’s award-winning floral displays and green spaces have been praised after helping the town win a major accolade.
Volunteers, community groups, schools and organisations came together for the first Greener Together Celebration Awards after Bishop Auckland’s Northumbria in Bloom success on September 16.
The town was awarded Gold and named best in class in the Larger Towns category, with the achievement credited to the efforts of people working throughout the community.
Projects recognised included improved town-centre flower beds and planters, work on the Kingsway garden and the Railway Garden’s continuing transformation.

Schools, Bishop Auckland College, environmental groups and volunteers have all helped improve areas around the town.
Allotment holders were also recognised, with awards for the best plots at participating sites and prizes for newcomers.
Councillor Michael Siddle, Mayor of Bishop Auckland, said: "Winning Gold and being named best in class in the Larger Towns category was an incredible moment for Bishop Auckland.
"This achievement reflects the people, partnerships, and community spirit behind our success.
"I want to thank everyone who has given their time, energy and enthusiasm to making our town a place we can all be proud of."
Local resident David Johnson, known as the "Can Man", was recognised for his contribution; he collects and recycles cans to raise money for local charities.
His efforts also inspired the town council to introduce a mobile can-crushing station for use at events.
The Greener Together Working Group was set up this year to unite people and organisations improving Bishop Auckland’s environment and turn ideas into projects.
The town council now funds and maintains several town-centre planting schemes, including beds planted with perennials.
Town Clerk Sarah Harris said: "The Greener Together Celebration Awards are an opportunity to thank everyone whose time, ideas and enthusiasm have helped transform our town.
"Our Northumbria in Bloom success is a shared achievement, and we hope it inspires even more people to get involved as we continue to build on this momentum."
