Five new padel courts are coming to Teesside after a new facility has been given the go-ahead.

The Padel Club will turn an undeveloped plot west of Hanzard Drive in Wynyard into a purpose-built venue with five courts, a club building and a warm-up area.

The development will also include 30 parking spaces, new vehicle and pedestrian access, landscaping and drainage works.

The arrival of the courts has been welcomed by people living in Wynyard, where supporters say sporting facilities have failed to keep pace with the extensive residential development in the area.

Allan Fletcher, speaking for Wynyard Parish Council, said: “Supportive infrastructure is badly required to support the extensive house building which is ongoing within the Stockton and Hartlepool areas of Wynyard.

“If approved, this planning application will provide much-needed sports facilities.

"Therefore, Wynyard Parish Council support 24/1584/FUL."

While backing the development, the parish council told Stockton Council that residents elsewhere in Wynyard still lacked a safe way to reach it without driving.

Fletcher said: "It is ironic that a sports facility sited near to Hanzard Drive would, currently, encourage residents living in Wynyard Village to access it safely only by car.

"There is still no schedule or funding for the long-promised pedestrian bridge crossing over the A689."

Wynyard resident Kane Forrester also welcomed the development, describing it as the first sports facility at Wynyard Park.

He said: “As a resident of Wynyard, I fully support bringing forward the first sports facility on Wynyard Park (and Wynyard in general if you exclude the sports pitch at the Primary school)."

Like the parish council, Forrester also raised concerns about transport links.

He said: “The lack of a spine road and A689 crossing from Hanzard Drive means that the only safe way to access it is via car, except for residents of East Wynyard Park.

“The council should consider this in the broader context of planning permissions being granted within Wynyard Park, but I don't expect this specific application to solve the lack of infrastructure.

“Residents who've learned of this application are also highly optimistic about it, and I expect to see more comments in support.”

With approval now secured, the vacant plot off Hanzard Drive is set to take on a new life as a dedicated padel venue, adding to the facilities available as Wynyard continues to grow.
