A spokesperson for Asda said: "At the time of shipment, this product successfully passed all required tests.
"However, subsequent testing has identified that it may contain phthalates at levels exceeding the permitted regulatory limit.
"Certain phthalates, including Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are subject to regulatory restrictions because prolonged exposure above specified limits may pose potential health risks and possibly cause damage to the reproductive system.
"While no safety incidents have been reported, we're taking this action to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and to maintain our commitment to consumer safety.
"The product doesn't meet the requirements of the REACH Regulations.
"If you've purchased this bag, please bring it back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund.
"You do not need your receipt.
"We're very sorry for any inconvenience caused.
"If you'd like any further information, please contact Asda Customer Relations – 0330 053 0111."

What is a product recall?
If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, it may be 'withdrawn' from shelves or 'recalled' when customers are asked to return it.
The Food Standards Agency issues allergy alerts when foods have to be withdrawn or recalled because of missing or incorrect allergy labelling, or if there is any other food allergy risk.
