Free holiday club and meal scheme extended to more children across Teesside

More Middlesbrough children can access free holiday activities and healthy meals after extra funding expanded the Bring it on Boro scheme.

More children across Teesside will be able to enjoy free activities and meals during the school holidays thanks to a new council scheme.

Bring it on Boro is offering more places in Middlesbrough through the Government-funded Holiday Activities and Food programme, providing eligible children with free activities and healthy meals.

Extra funding from Middlesbrough Council’s Crisis and Resilience Fund means families who do not qualify for the usual HAF support will now have access to funding.

The offer will now include children from families receiving Universal Credit, those on low incomes and those living with a terminal illness.

Children aged 5 to 16 can claim free places at activities run by youth groups, community groups, sports clubs and businesses across Middlesbrough.

Chris Cooke, Mayor of Middlesbrough, said: "Bring it on Boro is about making sure children across our town have the chance to enjoy themselves, try something different and make great memories during the holidays.

"I want every young person in Middlesbrough to have the best possible start in life, that’s why we’ve increased funding for Bring it on Boro so it runs through every half-term break as well as the Easter, Christmas and summer holidays.

"We know school holidays can be difficult for families, particularly when money is tight.

"These extra places mean more children can take part in activities they might otherwise miss out on, while also getting a healthy meal.

"Giving young people the best possible start in life is key to ensuring Middlesbrough thrives, and I’m pleased we can extend these opportunities to even more families."

Bring it on Boro now runs during half-term as well as the main school holidays, giving families more opportunities throughout the year.

The expansion forms part of wider investment in youth services through the Middlesbrough Childhood Guarantee, launched by Mayor Cooke to help ensure children can access opportunities and experiences regardless of their background.

Cooke has also pledged to open a new youth club in every Middlesbrough ward.
