Chilling moment wing of plane almost scrapes runway during Storm Boelo

A passenger plane appeared to come perilously close to scraping its wing on the runway while landing in powerful Storm Boelo winds

A passenger aircraft narrowly avoided scraping its wing on the tarmac while touching down in fierce winds brought by Storm Boelo.

SunExpress flight XQ598 was completing its journey to Edinburgh Airport from Antalya, Turkey, when the Boeing 737 MAX 8 encountered severe gusts during its final approach on Sunday. The aircraft made a safe landing just before 12.10pm while a Met Office amber wind warning remained active.

Video footage circulated on social media captures the plane approaching the runway at a slanted angle as its wings bend and flex in the turbulent conditions. As it nears the ground, the aircraft visibly responds to the wind's force, with one wing positioned considerably higher than the other, reports the Express.

Its right wing then comes remarkably close to the runway surface as the aircraft makes contact with the ground. Despite the nerve-wracking approach, the plane touched down safely and proceeded to the terminal without incident.

Those who viewed the footage commended the pilots for successfully navigating the aircraft through such demanding circumstances. One viewer commented: "Huge respect to the pilots working in these conditions."

Another remarked: "Now that's what you call skilled flying. I can't imagine the sheer amount of stress pilots come under flying in these conditions." A passenger travelling on the flight stated after watching footage of the landing: "We were on the flight, could feel it landing on one wheel, never realised it was that close."

This incident occurred as a Jet2 passenger aircraft briefly departed the runway following its arrival at Birmingham Airport during Storm Boelo. A Boeing 737-800, with registration G-JZHE, was carrying out flight LS1310 from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Birmingham when the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Flight-tracking information referenced by AeroXplorer indicated the aircraft touched down on Birmingham Airport's Runway 33 at approximately 2.19pm. The plane's left main landing gear is understood to have veered onto the grass verge adjacent to the runway before the aircraft returned to the tarmac. Jet2 blamed the incident on "exceptional weather conditions" brought about by Storm Boelo.

A spokesperson stated: "Flight LS1310 from Venice to Birmingham temporarily moved off the runway after landing at Birmingham Airport earlier this afternoon, due to exceptional weather conditions caused by Storm Boelo.

"The aircraft immediately returned to the runway and has now taxied to the stand. We can confirm that everyone has disembarked as normal." No injuries were reported in the wake of the incident.
