Communities across Harrogate, Ripon and Nidderdale will come together in November to remember those who lost their lives in conflict, with services, parades, wreath-laying ceremonies and a concert planned for Remembrance season.
Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November 2026, with Armistice Day following on Wednesday 11 November.
Events are planned in Harrogate, Ripon and Pateley Bridge, with the annual commemorations also including a service at the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery at Stonefall.
Harrogate town centre
Harrogate Town Council has listed its Remembrance Sunday commemoration for Sunday 8 November, beginning at 10.30am at the Harrogate War Memorial.
The annual event brings together veterans, armed forces representatives, cadets, civic leaders and members of the public to pay their respects to those who have served and sacrificed their lives.
Last year’s commemoration included wreath-laying, the two-minute silence, the sounding of the Last Post and a parade led by trainees from the Army Foundation College. Music was provided by Harrogate Band and Tewit Well Youth Band.
A Remembrance service also followed at St Peter’s Church.
Further details are available from Harrogate Town Council.
Remembrance at Stonefall Commonwealth War Graves
A separate act of remembrance is traditionally held at the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery at Stonefall, on the outskirts of Harrogate.
The cemetery contains the graves of Commonwealth service personnel who died during the First and Second World Wars. Its large Air Force plot includes more than 900 casualties from the Second World War.
The annual service has previously been attended by representatives of Commonwealth nations, civic representatives and trainees from the Army Foundation College. Harrogate Brigantes Rotary Club has also helped organise the commemoration.
A Remembrance Day service and wreath laying ceremony will take place on Sunday, 9 November at 13:00 GMT at Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery.
Ripon commemorations
In Ripon, the annual Remembrance Sunday commemoration begins at the War Memorial in Spa Gardens at 10.30am on Sunday 8 November.
The ceremony is followed by a parade past the Town Hall and Market Square before a Remembrance service at Ripon Cathedral.
Ripon also holds a shorter military commemoration in the Memorial Garden at Kirkgate Gardens, opposite the cathedral, on the first Saturday in November.
Further information is available from the Royal British Legion’s Ripon branch.
Concert of Remembrance at Ripon Cathedral
Ripon Cathedral will host a Concert of Remembrance on Thursday 5 November.
Doors open at 6.45pm, with the concert beginning at 7.15pm. The event is organised alongside the Ripon Community Poppy Project and will feature East Cleveland Brass, soprano Charlotte Potter, cornet player Mark Sidwell and organist Dr Richard Martin.
Tickets cost £17 and are available from local outlets in Ripon and online, with booking fees potentially applying to online purchases.
Further details are available from the Ripon Community Poppy Project.
Pateley Bridge and Nidderdale
Pateley Bridge will also mark Remembrance Sunday with its annual service and parade.
The event traditionally involves a march from Bewerley Recreation Park towards the memorial on Park Road, with the service held at the town’s cenotaph. Cadets from the Army Foundation College have previously taken part alongside local residents and community representatives.
The commemoration provides an opportunity for people across Nidderdale to gather and remember those who died in service to their country.
The precise timings for the 2026 Pateley Bridge service have not yet been confirmed in the event information available. Details can be checked through the Pateley Bridge events website.
Remembering across the district
Remembrance events provide an opportunity for people of all ages to pay tribute to members of the armed forces and civilians who lost their lives in war and conflict, as well as those who continue to serve.
As well as the main town-centre commemorations, services may take place in villages and parish churches across the district. Residents are encouraged to check with their local town or parish council, church or Royal British Legion branch for arrangements in their community.
Armistice Day falls on Wednesday 11 November. The traditional two-minute silence will be observed at 11am, marking the time the armistice came into effect in 1918.
