A petition calling for the state pension age to be reduced to 65 for everyone has passed 100,000 signatures, triggering consideration for a debate in Parliament.
The campaign argues that lowering the state pension age could allow older people to retire with dignity, avoid financial hardship and free up jobs for younger workers entering the labour market.
The petition, created by Michelle Gill, has attracted 100,769 signatures and remains open until March 16, 2027.
It calls for the current state pension age to be reduced to 65, arguing that people aged 65 to 67 can face poor health, caring responsibilities and limited employment opportunities while waiting to qualify for their state pension.
The campaign argues that forcing people to work longer can be unfair for those who are struggling with their health or unable to find suitable employment.
It also suggests that allowing older workers to retire earlier could create more opportunities for younger people trying to get into work.
Petition to reduce state pension age reaches key milestone
The petition passed the 100,000-signature threshold, meaning the Petitions Committee will consider it for debate in Parliament.
An update published on October 24, 2026, confirmed the milestone.
However, reaching the threshold does not guarantee that a debate will take place, nor does it mean the Government has agreed to change the state pension age.
In fact, earlier this month they made a statement, saying: "The Government has no plans to lower the State Pension age."
They added: "State Pension age is now gradually rising from 66 to 67.
"This increase began in April 2026 and will complete in March 2028.
"Increases to State Pension age have been in legislation since the Pensions Act 1995.
"As longevity has increased and our society aged, State Pension age rises have maintained fairness between generations and protected the public finances."
The petition remains open for people to sign until March 16, 2027.
