Bradford’s Lord Mayor has received the first poppy of the year from the Royal British Legion.

Councillor Chris Herd was presented with the symbolic flower by Gillian Carr, the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal manager for Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees, at City Hall on Thursday, October 22.

The poppy marks the launch of this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in the Bradford District.

Cllr Herd said: "We are proud to again support this very important annual appeal which not only commemorates the sacrifices made by members of our Armed Forces and their families, past and present, but also funds the many services provided by the Royal British Legion to support these communities."

The Royal British Legion’s annual appeal raises funds to support the Armed Forces community and to honour the service and sacrifice of veterans, serving personnel, and their families.

It's believed that the ceremony of the Lord Mayor receiving the first poppy to launch the Poppy Appeal in Bradford dates back to the late 1920s or early 1930s.
