Drivers are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel after the Redheugh Bridge was closed due to high winds as Storm Boelo continues to sweep across the North East.
Newcastle City Council announced the closure on Sunday afternoon to protect the public as the weather worsened.
In a statement, the council said: "The Redheugh Bridge has this afternoon been closed due to high winds and motorists are being advised to only travel if necessary.
"We understand this causes further disruption with the 10-day closure of the Tyne Bridge over half term but the decision has been taken with public safety in mind."
The closure is expected to add to congestion across the region, with the Tyne Bridge already shut for planned works during the half-term holiday period.
Drivers crossing the Tyne have been told to use the A1, Tyne Tunnel, Scotswood Bridge or Swing Bridge instead.
The council added: "If travel is essential then please use the A1, Tyne Tunnel, Scotswood Bridge or Swing Bridge to cross the River Tyne but please consider staying at home if possible."
Council crews have tackled weather-related incidents across the city throughout the weekend.
"Our crews are out and about across the city responding to the storm this weekend to keep communities safe and infrastructure clear.
"Thank you to everyone on duty in these tough conditions.
"We will keep you updated with the ongoing bridge closures."
The disruption comes as Storm Boelo batters parts of the UK with powerful gusts and damaging winds.
