A boozed-up County Durham man who raped a woman in North Yorkshire has been put behind bars.
Norman Carr, 55, was staying for a few days in the county when he got drunk and raped a woman, York Crown Court heard.
“The effect it has had upon the woman has been profound,” the Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris said.
“It will take her years to be able to come to terms with this, if she ever does.
"This is something the woman is going to be living with for the rest of her life.”
He said she had no responsibility at all for Carr’s actions.
He told Carr: “No doubt it happened because you had had a lot of alcohol.
"It was out of character.
"It was so out of character... it is worrying.”
He made Carr subject to an eight-year sexual harm prevention order enabling police to monitor the rapist’s behaviour and placing controls on what he can do.
Carr, of Byron Street, Wheatley Hill, County Durham, pleaded guilty to rape.
He has no previous convictions.
He was jailed for six years, put on the sex offenders’ register for life and banned from any contact from the woman also for life.
For Carr, Paul Abrahams said he was troubled by what he had done and wanted to apologise.
His imprisonment would cause problems for those closest to him.
