What the jury has heard so far during Seaham garage murder trial

Daniel Ambler murder trial: Jurors hear a family feud led to the 23-year-old being chased and hit by a car at a Seaham petrol station.

Jurors have heard how a family feud was at the heart of the violent confrontation which ended in the alleged murder of Daniel Ambler.

A chance encounter between Mr Ambler and a member of the Anderson family at a bus stop in Seaham soon escalated into the death of the 23-year-old.

Mr Ambler was beaten, chased and rammed into a garage shop after he was spotted at a bus stop with friends.

The 23-year-old was hit by a car at the Esso garage on Stockton Road, Seaham, at about 4.50pm on Thursday, January 15, and suffered fatal injuries.

Barry Anderson, his sons Ashton and Logan, Aja Henry and Tyler Leadbetter are accused of murdering Daniel Ambler and violent disorder.

Prosecutor Matthew Donkin said the catalyst for the violence was the stabbing of Barry Anderson in August last year.

Mr Ambler’s brother David and his friend Jed Wilson fought the 52-year-old, who was stabbed during the fight.

The feud erupted again when Ashton Anderson spotted Mr Ambler waiting for a bus in Seaham and rounded up his father, brother and two friends.

Within minutes, Barry Anderson attacked Mr Ambler’s friend Reece Wilkin. His son Ashton and friends Aja Henry and Tyler Leadbetter then joined in.

The three younger murder suspects got back into their car and chased Mr Ambler after he broke free.

A witness filling up his car at the Esso station told jurors he saw a Nissan X-Trail speed on to the forecourt and smash into Mr Ambler.

Giving evidence, Daniel Miller said: "I saw a Nissan X-Trail car come from the same direction driving towards this chap and hit the man.

"The car continued going with the chap pinned to the shop front area and the car came to a stop."

Opening the case, prosecutor Matthew Donkin KC said recordings clearly captured the final seconds and showed how Daniel Ambler was killed.

"It was a deliberate piece of driving by Ashton Anderson to drive up the road after him, to turn into the forecourt and continue to pursue him and then to drive into him.

“And once he hit him, there was no deviation or attempt to stop, the car was driven into the front of the shop with the inevitable consequence of killing Daniel Ambler.”

Barry Anderson, 52, of Canon Cockin Street, Sunderland; Ashton Anderson, 20, of Ryton Crescent, Seaham; and Barry Logan Anderson, 19, of Nursery View, Shotton Bank, face murder and violent disorder charges.

Ajay Henry, of Melrose Crescent, Seaham, and Tyler Leadbetter, of Elgin Avenue, Seaham, were both 17 when they were charged with murder.

The teenagers can now be named because the reporting restriction expired when they turned 18.
