Rare Gothic Crown expected to fetch up to £12,000 at North Yorkshire auction

Rare 1847 Victorian Gothic Crown estimated at up to £12,000 leads Tennants Auctioneers’ coins sale in Leyburn on November 18, alongside historic British coins.

A rare Victorian coin expected to fetch up to £12,000 will lead a specialist sale in North Yorkshire next month.

The 1847 Gothic Crown will be the highlight of Tennants Auctioneers’ Coins and Banknotes Sale in Leyburn on November 18.

Considered one of the Royal Mint’s most iconic designs, the coin is widely sought after by collectors.

A spokesman for Tennants Auctioneers said: "The Gothic Crown is a highly sought-after, prized piece and is expected to sell for £10,000-£12,000."

This particular example is a rare variant struck in nearly pure silver with a plain edge, believed to represent only a small fraction of the 8,000 Gothic Crowns produced.

It is described as being in excellent condition with rich iridescent toning and minimal signs of wear.

In the hammered coin section, a well-struck penny of Edward the Confessor from the 1060s, minted in York, is estimated to sell for £350-£450.

Coins from the era of the English Civil War and its aftermath will also feature, including a Newark Siege sixpence from 1646 and an Oliver Cromwell shilling from 1658, both expected to achieve £400-£600.

A rare George III ‘Northumberland’ shilling from 1763 will stand out in the milled section, with an estimate of £600-£800.

A spokesman said: "Silver regal coinage was minted sporadically during the second half of the 18th century, and this issue had a relatively low mintage of only 100,000, with only a small proportion likely to have survived in high grade."
