Police Scotland has carried out emergency evacuations in South Ayrshire due to severe weather and flooding caused by Storm Boelo.

In an update issued on Sunday evening, the force said it has responded to a large number of incidents across the country and particularly in the south-west, which has been "especially affected".

This has included the evacuation of dangerous buildings in Ayr and a caravan park in Ballantrae, South Ayrshire, where 15 guests were helped to safety due to flooding.

Officers are also responding to a small number of isolated incidents across the country, including the death of a man in the Castle Douglas area after he was struck by a falling tree.

A large number of roads, particularly local routes, remain closed due to debris and fallen trees.

An amber weather warning remains in place covering the whole of Scotland, with the exception of Orkney and Shetland, until 9pm on Sunday.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland said: “This weekend has seen a significant response from our officers and staff across the country due to the scale of the impact caused by Storm Boelo. We have supported and worked closely with a range of partners.

“Our advice to people is to continue to follow advice from the emergency services, local authorities and other agencies.

“Please be mindful that the amber weather warning remains in place until 9pm on Sunday and disruption is likely well beyond that due to further poor weather, fallen trees and other damage caused by the storm.

“Police Scotland will continue to work closely alongside partners including emergency services, local authorities and health and social care to respond to Storm Boelo.”
