Harrogate Tesco wins national award for environmental impact

A Tesco store in Harrogate has won a national award recognising its environmental impact at the 2026 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) UK Awards.

Tesco Harrogate: Low Carbon Concept Store received the Environmental Impact Award at the awards’ grand final, held in London on Thursday 22 October 2026.

The awards recognise building and development projects across the UK, with the Harrogate store recognised for incorporating sustainability measures into its design, construction and operation.

Low-carbon design

The store combines a timber frame, a recycled concrete slab and solar panels, which Tesco says provide around 20% of the building’s energy.

The project also incorporates water management and biodiversity measures. According to the RICS judges, it was designed to test approaches that could be used in future developments.

In their assessment, the judges said the project brought together lower-carbon materials, renewable energy, smarter water management and biodiversity improvements as part of a wider environmental strategy.

They also highlighted a college recruitment partnership and the store’s contribution to the pilot UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard.

Tesco has said the concept store forms part of its wider efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its stores and distribution network, with a stated ambition to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations by 2035.

National recognition

The Harrogate store was among the winners across several categories at the RICS UK Awards grand final.

Belfast Grand Central Station received both the Project of the Year award and the Infrastructure Award, while other winners included developments in Manchester, Llanelli and London.

The RICS awards recognise projects across the built and natural environments, including commercial development, heritage, housing, community benefit and environmental impact.
