‘One in a million’ York man died after coming off his motorbike in Germany

A York father described as ‘one in a million’ died after a motorbike crash while in Germany.

Stephen Boyes died on Friday, 4 September, in a hospital in the city of Koblenz, south of Cologne. He was 60.

Assistant North Yorkshire coroner Catherine Devereux opened the inquest into his death at Northallerton yesterday (Thursday).

She said the circumstances known at this time are that Mr Boyes suffered injuries after coming off his motorbike while in Germany.

He was taken to hospital and died a few days later.

The provisional medical cause of death was given as: right-sided heart failure; asphyxia; swelling of the brain (subfalcine herniation); and a blockage to a blood vessel to the brain (middle cerebral artery infarction).

In a memoriam page for Mr Boyes, who was born in York and still lived in the city, friends paid tribute to the devoted family man.

One described him as “one in a million”. Another said, “What a character, you will be so missed.”

Ms Devereux adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed.
