A pub has closed its doors just six months after reopening.

The Roebuck Inn in Utley, Keighley, announced that it was shutting its doors on Tuesday.

It has been owned by Stonegate Pub Co since March.

'Genuinely broken heart'

Co-landlord Chris Charlesworth announced the news on Facebook.

He said: "It’s with a genuinely broken heart that I have to announce The Roebuck is closing its doors once again.

"I’ve put my heart, soul, time, money and everything I had into this place because I genuinely believed in what we were building.

"Sadly, I don’t believe Stonegate has allowed the flexibility needed for this business to overcome its struggles and grow."

Stonegate said it was aware of the concerns raised but its focus was now on recruiting a new publican to take it on.

'I never got a wage'

Mr Charlesworth and his business partner, Nathan Millington, had taken over as general manager and director following the pub’s previous closure in December 2025.

At the time, he told the T&A: "Our social media pages have had some absolutely great interaction – the town and local community are really behind it.

"We won't be offering food for a few weeks as we have literally had eight days from signing for the pub to opening it – attempting to hire a new team, getting all offerings in place etc – but we will solve this in a few weeks.

"We'll be showing Sky Sports, holding regular events like weekly quizzes and bingo nights, and have live singers, themed event parties, pool and darts."

Speaking to the T&A today, Mr Charlesworth said the financial reality was bleak.

He said: "The business didn’t make much money and I never got a wage."

'People are not going out and drinking enough these days'

Mr Charlesworth added: "It’s a good community pub.

"One issue is that people are not going out and drinking enough these days.

"But Stonegate don’t seem bothered about it."

Mr Charlesworth added that, despite some initial naivety, he did expect more support.

He said: "There was no help to make sure we didn’t fail."

Full statement from Stonegate

A spokesperson for Stonegate said: "We are aware of the concerns raised by the former publican of The Roebuck.

"However, it would not be appropriate for us to comment on the specific circumstances.

"Our focus is now on recruiting a new publican to take on the pub, and we look forward to welcoming guests back as soon as possible."
