Chicken shop now 'permanently closed' after 1 star food hygiene rating

A chicken shop was issued a list of urgent legal requirements following a food safety inspection.

Crispy Chicken, located at 269 Leeds Road in Shipley, was inspected by Bradford Council's Environmental Health Food Safety Team on April 2 and was given a one-star hygiene rating.

The inspection revealed several critical areas needing immediate attention.

On Google it says the business is now 'permanently closed'.

What the report revealed

The inspectors found that the business did not have an adequate supply of BS EN-compliant sanitiser on-site for cleaning and disinfection duties.

They stressed the importance of having enough cleaning and disinfection materials to prevent the risk of cross-contamination.

It was recommended that ready-to-eat items be stored above raw items to prevent cross-contamination.

They also instructed the business to ensure the wash hand basin is always ready for use.

Food stored in open tins

The practice of storing foods in open tins was also criticised, as it can lead to food contamination.

Inspectors recommended transferring foods to cleanable containers.

Crispy Chicken was instructed to cease the practice of storing scoops and spoons in storage containers.

They instructed the business to ensure all high-risk food is covered.

Ventilation unit not working

The inspection also revealed several structural issues that needed immediate attention.

It was found that the extraction canopy ventilation above the Henny Penny machine was not working, and the business was using natural ventilation as a temporary measure.

The inspectors instructed the business to repair the ventilation unit as soon as possible.

Other structural issues included a leaking drainpipe to the wash hand basin in the toilet, a wash hand basin in the main kitchen that only provided hot water, and deteriorating floor covering under the pizza oven.

Fabric chair in food prep area

A burnt/melted spatula that could not be maintained in a clean condition was also discovered.

Food hygiene instructed the business to seal the floor where there are chipped tiles to provide a smooth, impervious, easy-to-clean surface.

The inspectors also found a fabric chair in the food preparation area, which cannot be cleaned or maintained in a clean condition.

Several issues with the business's management control procedures also came to light.

Training must be complete

The business did not have a documented food safety management system on-site.

The inspectors explained that a new pack was on order following a move from a previous business.

They instructed the business to put in place and implement a documented set of food safety procedures and documented diary or monitoring checks commensurate to the activities taking place at the new business.

Crispy Chicken were informed that all food handlers must complete food hygiene training commensurate to the activities they complete in the food business.

The T&A would welcome a response from the owners of Crispy Chicken.
