A vehicle fire in the Tyne Tunnel led to major traffic delays on Saturday afternoon, with both tunnels temporarily closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.
Tyne Tunnel operator TT2 first warned drivers at about 4.45pm that southbound traffic was being held.
TT2 later confirmed emergency crews were at the scene.
TT2 then announced that traffic was being held in both directions due to the vehicle fire, warning drivers to expect disruption while crews worked at the scene.
In a subsequent update, a spokesperson for TT2 said: "Traffic remains held in both directions following a vehicle fire in the southbound tunnel.
"The fire is now out and recovery is underway.
"We will keep you updated with further movements.
"Thank you for your patience."
