A popular County Durham attraction will close on Sunday as Storm Boelo is forecast to bring high winds across the North East.

Beamish Museum confirmed the closure on social media, saying visitor and staff safety came first as severe weather approached.

A Beamish Museum spokesperson said: "Due to the forecasted high winds during Storm Boelo, we will not be able to open the museum tomorrow (Sunday, October 25).

"The safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers must always come first.

"We're sorry for any inconvenience and look forward to welcoming you again soon."

The museum said it currently plans to reopen as normal on Monday, October 26, but urged visitors to check its website and social media channels before travelling.

The closure comes as weather warnings cover parts of the UK, with Storm Boelo expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain and travel disruption.

It is the latest North East event cancelled because of the storm.

Darlington Outdoor Market and Richmond Artisan Market are among those cancelled because of the forecast conditions.

The Met Office has also issued a fresh yellow warning for strong winds across County Durham and much of the North East.

Forecasters expect widespread gusts of 50mph to 60mph, with exposed and coastal areas facing winds of 70mph or more.

The Met Office warned that strong winds could disrupt travel and cause damage, urging residents to check the latest forecasts.
