A new yellow weather warning has been issued across County Durham and the North East as winds could top 70mph on Tuesday.

The Met Office warning covers County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland on Tuesday, October 27.

Forecasters say strong west to south-westerly winds will spread across northern England, with gusts of 50 to 60mph possible quite widely.

Some coastal and exposed locations could see winds reach 70mph or more, although there remains uncertainty over where the strongest gusts will occur.

The Met Office warns the conditions could cause damage and disruption to travel across the region.

What disruption could the strong winds cause?

The Met Office says road, rail, air and ferry services could be affected, potentially leading to longer journey times or cancellations.

There is also a chance that some roads and bridges could close.

Buildings and trees could be damaged, including tiles being blown from roofs, while power cuts are also possible.

The warning also highlights a small risk of injury from flying debris.

Coastal areas could face particularly dangerous conditions, with large waves and beach material potentially being thrown onto seafronts, coastal roads and properties.

The Met Office has assessed the warning as having a low likelihood of between 10 and 25 per cent but a significant potential impact.
