Car parks and roads in a North East city regeneration area are set to close as major infrastructure work begins ahead of redevelopment.

The closures will begin on Monday, October 26, for drainage, remediation and groundworks linked to the wider Riverside Sunderland regeneration project.

The affected car parks are the triangular site at the Hay Street-Easington Street junction and the car park beside St Peter’s Metro Station.

Councillor James Jackson, cabinet member for business, housing and regeneration at Sunderland City Council, said: "These closures are necessary to allow work to continue on the transformation of the Sheepfolds neighbourhood, which is one of the most significant regeneration projects currently taking place in the city.

"We recognise that these changes will disrupt regular users, which is why we have submitted plans for a temporary replacement off Millennium Way.

"The redevelopment will create a vibrant new neighbourhood and play an important role in the wider Riverside Sunderland vision, bringing long-term benefits for residents, businesses and visitors."

Roads and on-street parking in Sheepfolds will also be affected while temporary hoardings are erected around the construction site.

Sheepfolds Stables will remain open, with vehicle access via Richmond Street and its adjacent car park still available.

The council has applied to build a temporary 186-space car park just north of Sheepfolds, off Millennium Way, to replace lost parking.

If approved, the car park could open in early spring 2027.

During the works, visitors to Sheepfolds Stables, the Stadium of Light, the British E Sports Arena, the Housing and Construction Skills Academy and other nearby destinations must use North Bridge Street and Millennium Way, or Kier Hardie Way and Millennium Way.
