A County Durham man on the sex offenders register has been given a conditional discharge after admitting he failed to keep police informed while homeless and living in a tent.

Nathan Brian Rusted, 27, from Chester-le-Street, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on October 20.

Rusted pleaded guilty to failing to register with police as required by the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

The court heard Rusted failed to keep police informed between October 15 and October 19 because he was homeless and living in a tent.

Magistrates were told Rusted had to register every seven days.

Magistrates gave Rusted a six-month conditional discharge, stepping outside sentencing guidelines because of his guilty plea and lack of accommodation.

Rusted was ordered to pay a £26 victim services surcharge, but no costs because he already owed fines.
