The North Yorkshire town of Whitby was previously named one of the UK's most scenic towns.

The seaside spot earned a place on a list of the 11 most scenic UK towns compiled by World Atlas.

Whitby was featured alongside the likes of Rye, Ambleside, Lavenham, Bakewell and Bourton-on-the-Water.

Locations on the list were picked for several reasons, including landscapes, atmosphere, and history.

But what does it really cost to live in Whitby?

Why is Whitby one of the most scenic towns in the UK

Sharing why Whitby earned a spot on the list, World Atlas said: "Whitby announces itself with a skyline unlike anywhere else on the Yorkshire coast: the gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey crowning the clifftop above the harbour, visible for miles before you ever reach the town.

"Climbing the 199 steps up to the abbey rewards you with some of the best views in North Yorkshire, and the ruins themselves feel genuinely haunting, especially in low afternoon light.

"The abbey's clifftop setting also inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula here, and the town leans into that legacy with real enthusiasm, drawing visitors from around the world for its Goth weekends and atmospheric evening walks.

"Down below, Whitby's working harbour is lined with fish and chip shops, ice cream stalls, and fishing boats coming and going, giving the town a lively, salty energy that contrasts nicely with the quiet above.

"Across the swing bridge, the old town's narrow cobbled streets and yards are worth losing an hour or two in, filled with independent shops selling Whitby jet jewellery and local crafts."
