A rescue effort involving a mountain rescue team was sparked after a walker was injured at one of Scotland's most remote bothies.

On Wednesday, October 21, Assynt Mountain Rescue Team was called out to assist an injured walker in the Sandwood Bay area.

An experienced walker had injured their ankle whilst close to Strathchailleach Bothy which they were visiting with their son and they were now unable to walk.

Reay Forest Estate assisted with one of their all-terrain vehicles, which was used to transport team members and equipment to the bothy where they treated the casualty’s injured ankle.

The casualty was then transferred back to the car park at Blairmore, where an ambulance was waiting at the roadside, whilst the rest of the team walked back out with the casualty’s son.

The callout was Assynt Mountain Rescue team’s 28th of 2026 - equalling the team’s busiest year on record.
