In 1963, aged 14, the current monarch bought a cherry brandy at The Crown after giving his security detail the slip whilst on an excursion. A tabloid reporter witnessed the event, turning it into a front-page national scandal that led to the dismissal of his royal bodyguard.

As well as the food and drink operation, the hotel had 16 letting rooms.
