York and North Yorkshire is bracing for the arrival of Storm Boelo which is set to bring heavy rain and 60mph gusts to the area.

The storm comes as areas of Scarborough remain flooded following heavy rain in the seaside town throughout Friday (October 24).

Yellow warnings for wind and rain are in place for York and North Yorkshire from midday on Saturday to 9pm on Sunday, warning travel disruption is expected along with power cuts.

Flying debris is also "likely" and the storm will "probably" bring some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, the forecaster said.

Storm Boelo (pronounced Boo-loh) will follow Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, which brought disruption across the country on Friday.

Attractions in North Yorkshire, such as Forbidden Corner in Leyburn, have closed due to Storm Boelo.

Events including the Fountains by Floodlight experience at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, and Moonlight on the Lake in Scarborough are also no longer going ahead.

Flash flooding continues to cause disruption in areas of Scarborough on Saturday.

Police are urging motorists not to drive through floodwater.

It comes after emergency services were called to more than a dozen reports of flooding in Scarborough on Friday.

Meanwhile in York, attractions remain open but forecasters are expecting rain and 40mph winds on Saturday, rising to around 55mph on Sunday.

River levels remain low in York after a prolonged period of dry weather but will start rising slightly from Sunday.

Low water levels in reservoirs and rivers also mean Yorkshire remains in drought status.

Elsewhere, the Met Office’s deputy chief forecaster, Chris Bulmer, said gusts of 70-80mph are expected in exposed coastal areas of the UK during Storm Boelo.

"The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain, making for an impactful weekend of weather," he said.

"Severe weather warnings and forecast detail will continue to develop, so people should keep up to date with the forecast over the next few days."
