BRADFORD City and Bradford Northern both made rapid starts to their respective 1967-68 seasons.
And it made for a nice little feature in the T&A on this day 59 years ago.
City were in a fantastic vein of form, picking up six wins and a draw from their previous seven games.
Don Alred reported on the latest success, a 3-0 win over Newport County, where two goals from Charlie Rackstraw, in the "troublesome" number 11 spot, got them on their way.
With Bruce Bannister adding the third goal after 61 minutes, the Bantams were home and hosed with half-an-hour left to play.
The run had put them top of Division Four, and they continued it by beating Port Vale 2-1 on this day.
But it was not just the Bantams leading the way, with Northern also top of the table by two points.
They had won six of their last seven games and had just hammered York 33-14 at Wiggington Road.
They scored 20 points in the last 20 minutes to storm to victory.
Full back Alan Rhodes produced an outstanding performance, while York had no answer to rapid Northern winger Berwyn Jones.
But the good times sadly came to an end in agonising fashion for both Bradford clubs that season.
City drew with Doncaster at Valley Parade on the final day and missed out on promotion by just a single point, as Crewe and Hartlepools United got the results they needed to go up instead.
As for Northern, a damaging defeat to Huddersfield on the final day saw them slip from second to sixth in an incredibly tight table.
With no momentum after a poor end to the campaign, Bradford immediately slumped to a big home defeat against Wigan in the first round of the play-offs.
