A busy North East road will face temporary traffic restrictions for essential gas mains replacement works.

Sunderland Road in Gateshead will face several restrictions, including bans affecting cyclists and vehicles and the suspension of permit parking bays.

Gateshead Council’s restrictions will come into force on November 2.

The work is due to finish by November 27, but the order will remain valid for up to 18 months if there are delays.

While the work is under way, vehicles will be banned from waiting, loading or stopping on specified sections of the road, except those involved in the project and emergency vehicles on duty.

The affected cycle lane runs along the north side of Sunderland Road from Lingey Lane to 27 metres east of White Mere Gardens.

Parking restrictions will also cover the north side of the road from 63 metres east of Penshaw View for 75 metres eastwards.

The permit parking bay will also be suspended for 34 metres eastwards from a point 17 metres east of The Mews.

The order allows the gas mains replacement work to go ahead.

The restrictions will remain in force until the work is complete or traffic signs show they have ended.
