Stanningley Bypass set for closures for 20 days - Leeds council statement

The major road is set to close for 20 days

There will be more road closures at Dawsons Corner and Stanningley Bypass as the improvement scheme moves to its final stage.

Leeds City Council has said the improvement scheme at Stanningley Bypass and Dawsons Corner will see the final road surfacing begin in November. This will take place between Monday, November 9, and Sunday, November 29, with road and lane closures in place in the area and in surrounding parts of Leeds.

The work will generally take place between 8pm and 5am, with the roads and lanes then reopening each morning. This may be subject to change as it is dependent on the weather.

According to the council, the surfacing will take place in stages to manage disruption, with closures due on parts of Dawsons Corner, Bradford Road, Stanningley Bypass, and Owlcotes Lane. There will be access arrangements for New Pudsey Station, which will change during some stages.

Temporary restrictions will also be in place at the entrances to some residential streets. Both local residents and businesses will receive information about access arrangements, and business such as Owlcotes Shopping Centre will remain open as usual.

Planned closures - full list

Councillor Tom Hinchcliffe, Leeds City Council's executive member for transport and planning, said: "Having recently visited Dawsons Corner, I’ve seen first-hand the scale of the work taking place and the progress that’s being made.

"The final surfacing is another major milestone and brings us a significant step closer to completing a scheme that will make journeys through this busy junction safer, more reliable and better connected. We know these final works will cause some further disruption, so I’d encourage people to plan ahead and follow the signed diversion routes.

"This scheme is a significant and complex undertaking. It’s running to time and budget, with many local residents set to benefit from the new road layout, Stanningley Bypass resurfacing and flood prevention. The huge underground water attenuation tank is an impressive feat of engineering which will prevent flooding and protect the new roads from damage, should we get heavy rain.

"The new Weaver Network bus stops are in place and ready to serve local residents once our buses are brought back into public control early next year. New crossings will be in place to support pedestrians and young people walking to the nearby schools.

"Thank you to residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience. We’re now getting closer to the finish line and to everyone being able to benefit from the completed scheme."

The council says the £44 million scheme will be "transforming" the junction, improving journeys and creating more "accessible routes for people walking, wheeling and cycling". It is due to be completed in early 2027.

Further overnight works are also planned between November 30 and the end of December for final adjustments, including the tuning to the new traffic signals, landscaping, and tree planting.
