A Scottish chip shop institution has expanded into England for the first time following a £1.5 million investment - and it's already going down a storm with locals a week in.

Blue Lagoon launched its new 60-seat restaurant and takeaway in Newcastle on the edge of the city's Brigg Market on Friday, October 16.

The family-run business has a history spanning more than five decades, with Italian-born entrepreneur Ersilio Varese and childhood sweetheart Edda Varese opening the first Blue Lagoon Fish & Chip shop on Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street in 1975.

The Newcastle restaurant is the chain's 17th location overall.

The chain operates several locations across Scotland, primarily centered in Glasgow, Ayrshire, Stirling, Perth, and West Dunbartonshire.

The new restaurant has proved extremely popular among locals in Newcastle, with bosses saying that their deep fried Pizza Crunch, Battered Haggis & Deep Fried Mars Bars have been their best sellers so far.

In the first few days of opening, over 250 Battered Haggis, 500 Deep Fried Mars bars and 750 Pizza Crunches were sold in the first few days of opening, bosses told The Herald.

"The local Geordies have been incredibly welcoming to us, of which we are very grateful", bosses added.
