A NEW sandwich shop, run by the family behind a much-loved North Yorkshire café, is set to open in a York suburb later this month.

Murphys of Acomb – a new eatery offering a range of sandwich, soup, and takeaway lunch options - will open its doors in Front Street next Monday (October 26).

Owned by husband and wife Simon and Beverley Murphy, plus son Elliott and daughter-in-law Carol, this is family’s second foray into the food trade after they ran the successful café Hearts of Ampleforth in North Yorkshire for the past six years.

The decision to move their business to York came about following Carol’s pregnancy when the family began searching for a new location to make their work life balance easier for everyone.

Simon said: “We all live in East Yorkshire, close to York, so we wanted somewhere a little bit closer to home. We sold the business in Ampleforth last month to a lovely couple, Jess and Matt, and we got the keys here at the start of the month.

“Originally, we were hoping to open earlier in the month, but after our daughter in law had our grandson on Friday, we decided to wait until later on to have time to sort things out.”

Beverley said: “We’ve worked so hard to restore the place so our hope is that when people walk in, they’ll have a bit of a wow. So far, we’ve had lots of people have come by to see if we’re opening.”

Inside, the shop has been transformed from the former Sandwich Hut takeaway, with a brand new paint job, fresh equipment, and a complete rebrand to represent the quality ethos that the family want to put across.

Simon said: “It won’t be a just a cheese sandwich shop. We’ll be doing proper home cooked foods – nice, cooked hams, sausage rolls, soups, and other options like halloumi and peppers. We wanted to elevate things a little.

“We've got about 13 types of sandwiches planned on really nice breads, alongside 10 different types of paninis, hot sandwiches, and salad boxes.”

Beverley added: “We make everything ourselves and we don’t buy anything in, so we’ll have traybakes, cakes, our homemade sausage rolls which we’ve sold thousands of. We make soup.

“Everything is homemade and we hope our customers will appreciate a bit of quality.”

Murphys will also offer hot drinks, including coffees with beans supplied from local roastery Dancing Goat Coffee.

They will open its doors on Monday from 8am, with updates shared to their Facebook page – Murphy’s of Acomb.
