A community garden has been given a new lease of life thanks to a generous grant.

The garden, located at Acomb Explore in York, was improved with more than £1,500 in funding from the National Garden Scheme’s Community Garden Grants programme.

More than 20 years after the original raised beds were installed, the timber sleepers had reached the end of their lifespan and were replaced with new beds planted with climate-resilient species.

Fiona Reilly, centre manager at Acomb Explore, said: "We would like to extend our huge thanks to Westfield Ward for funding emergency repairs to the raised bed in January, helping us keep the garden safe for the families who use it throughout the year.

"Thanks to the generous support of the National Garden Scheme, we have now been able to create a beautiful new feature.

"It is a wonderful addition to the garden and will bring enjoyment to the many visitors who value this special space."

The project was delivered by the Friends of Acomb Library, with advice from the library’s gardening group and practical support from GoodGym volunteers.

A brass plaque recognising the support of the scheme was unveiled by the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Margaret Wells.

Additional funding came from the Westfield Ward Committee.
