Police officer found guilty of sexually assaulting three women at a York nightclub

A police officer has been found guilty of sexually assaulting three women at a York nightclub.

Martin Brough, 44, sexually touched the women in separate incidents on the dance floor at Popworld in December 2024.

Today (Thursday), a jury at York Crown Court found the police constable guilty of all three counts of sexual assault by touching. He wasn’t on duty at the time.

Brough, a West Yorkshire Police officer from Leeds, had denied all three charges.

Prosecutor Michael Morley showed the jury footage of a packed dance floor at the club in George Hudson Street where the sexual assaults occurred.

The footage showed Brough being escorted out of the club after the incidents.

Brough, of Ibbetson Oval, Morley, claimed he was merely pulling on the clothing of one of the victims.

Regarding the allegations made by the other two women, he claimed that if there was any physical contact, it was “purely accidental”.

The prosecution said that Brough intentionally touched the first woman on the bottom and that this was “sexual in nature” and without her consent.

Mr Morley said that one of the other women was also touched on the bottom and “we say it is sexual touching”.

The jury were unanimous in finding Brough guilty of one of the offences. They reached a majority guilty verdict of 11-to-one on the other two counts.

Judge Sean Morris, the Recorder of York, adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report by the Probation Service.

He granted Brough bail until sentence on 3 December.
