Bradford care home unveils new 27-bed dementia facility

A CARE home has opened a dedicated dementia floor designed to help residents reconnect with the past.

Bingley Park Care Home in Bradford launched the new facility on its Stoney Ridge Road site with a ceremony led by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Chris Herd.

The dementia floor offers 27 specialist beds and has been designed to evoke memories and stimulate conversation through familiar sights, sounds and experiences from earlier decades.

Vicky Thompson, home manager at Bingley Park Care Home, said: "We wanted to create much more than simply a new floor with bedrooms.

"We wanted to create somewhere that feels familiar, stimulating and meaningful for people living with dementia, where their life stories and memories can become part of everyday care."

The design includes a nursery, laundry area, and lounge furnished with original items from the 1950s to the 1980s, as well as a music therapy space, cinema room, sensory room, and indoor garden.

Ms Thompson said: "The decision to use genuine items from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s was really important to us.

"These aren't just old objects – they can be powerful triggers for memories, conversations and emotions.

"A familiar piece of music, an old-fashioned laundry item or something they remember from raising their own children can suddenly open up a conversation and help someone reconnect with a part of their past."

The floor also includes flexible living arrangements, with some bedrooms featuring interconnecting doors to allow for companion or couple accommodation.

Staff are undergoing additional training in dementia awareness and positive behaviour support, and the home aims to have all staff recognised as Dementia Friends through the Alzheimer’s Society.

Councillor Herd said: "It was a real pleasure to officially open Bingley Park's new dementia floor and see first-hand the thought and care that has gone into creating such a welcoming environment.

"The use of authentic items from previous decades is a particularly lovely touch.

"These familiar objects, music and surroundings can help people reconnect with important memories and provide opportunities for conversation and interaction."

Guests at the opening included healthcare professionals, members of the Older People's Mental Health Team, and representatives from dementia services across the local area.

The new floor is part of Bingley Park’s ongoing commitment to person-centred care, with an emphasis on recognising each resident’s unique history, interests, and experiences.
