A HEALTH programme is helping people with osteoporosis regain strength and confidence through supported exercise.
Nuffield Health’s Long-Term Conditions Programme, based in Shipley, was recently visited by the organisation’s chief executive Alex Perry, who met participants and rehabilitation specialists during a session held ahead of World Osteoporosis Day.
The scheme, developed in partnership with local participants and advocates, offers tailored exercise and support for people living with osteoporosis, with the aim of improving strength, balance, and overall wellbeing.
Mr Perry said: "Meeting the participants was a powerful reminder that movement can change lives.
"With the right support, people living with osteoporosis can build strength, confidence and independence, while benefiting from the encouragement and connection that comes from being part of a community."
The Bradford Osteoporosis Support Group currently has 11 members enrolled in the programme, which is designed to reduce fears around falls and fractures through expert-led exercise in a safe environment.
One participant, 73-year-old Dorothy Pearce, said: "I live in fear of another fracture because I know how devastating they can be.
"My diagnosis came as a huge shock because I'd always exercised regularly and tried to look after my health."
She said the programme had improved her posture, sleep, energy levels, and confidence, while also connecting her with others who understand the challenges of living with osteoporosis.
Another participant, Stella, stated the programme helped her regain independence after almost three years of isolation due to anxiety and a fear of falling.
She said: "Through the support of Hannah and the rest of the group, I've become stronger, more independent and more positive about the future.
"The programme has genuinely changed my life."
Nuffield Health is encouraging healthcare professionals to make greater use of exercise referral pathways and to consider specialist programmes as part of ongoing support for people with musculoskeletal conditions.
