Canadian politician calls on government to help BioWare employees buy the studio and run it themselves

TORONTO, CANADA - 2026/04/26: Avi Lewis, son of Stephen Lewis and the newly elected leader of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) in Canada seen speaking to the mourners. A memorial service at the Chrysalis Theatre at Toronto Metropolitan University honored the life and legacy of Canadian politician, diplomat, and activist Stephen Lewis, who died at 88. Mourners gathered to reflect on his work in human rights, social justice, and global HIV/AIDS advocacy. Tributes also highlighted his support for African grandmothers and community-led responses to the AIDS epidemic. (Photo by Stacey Newman/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)

The closure of BioWare is a tremendous loss, not just for gamers but for Canada: The Edmonton-based studio was named one of the country's best places to work multiple times over the years, even after the Electronic Arts acquisition that ultimately spelled its doom. It's not entirely surprising, then, that its shutdown caught the attention of one of the country's top politicians, who had some harsh words for Electronic Arts about it.

"This is private equity, this is what it does. Buy up businesses, run them into the ground, and rip them apart for short-term profit," Avi Lewis, leader of the New Democratic Party—traditionally Canada's third-largest political party, although it's run aground a bit over the past several years—wrote on social media.

"The developers at BioWare know how to run the studio. They know how to make the games we all love. They should be given the first opportunity—and the federal support—to buy it and run it themselves. And if we want to avoid the Mass Effect effect in Canada, we should be keeping private equity out, not welcoming it in."

The NDP are a center-left party, although the ol' Overton window has resulted in a more centrist style in recent years—a drift Lewis was elected specifically to correct. He's been fairly forceful on that front, speaking out in support of anti-fascist causes and calling for the nationalization of vital industries in Canada that have been swallowed up by larger international interests. Predictably, that led some of his followers to jokingly (I think) call for BioWare to be nationalized.

While the "Mass Effect effect" line is a bit of a clunker, Lewis showed off his gamer cred in response to an inquiry on X: When asked who he romanced in Mass Effect 2, he replied, "If I'm honest, I'm a Mass Effect 1 on the PS3 type of guy."
