A convicted rapist has been jailed after admitting to further historic offences against a girl.

John Tyler, 54, was sentenced to seven years at Durham Crown Court on October 14 after pleading guilty to four counts of rape against a child.

The offences took place decades ago, but were only reported in 2024 after the victim found the courage to come forward.

Detective Constable Adam Boyle, who led the investigation, said: "Tyler is a danger to women and girls and thanks to our courageous victim, will now remain behind bars.

"The victim showed true strength coming forward a second time and we want to remind other victims that it is never too later to report incidents so we can work to bring offenders to justice and protect the public."

Tyler, of HMP Wakefield, changed his plea to guilty after a jury had been sworn in.

The new sentence will be served consecutively to his current term for a separate rape conviction, which runs until 2032.

He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and the victim was granted a restraining order.
